July News Update 2009

Since I last put fingers to keyboard, we have had two successful major events on The Green.

Saturday June 20th saw The Green in full swing for the annual Fun Day, part of the Twickenham Festival (please see the photos below).  The Friends Stall was there as ever, giving us the chance to meet new members, and let people know just what we do for The Green.  Despite the odd rain shower, the day went well, and people were able to sit and enjoy the music.

Last Sunday, 12th July, The Friends of Twickenham Green, held their own event, their second annual Twickenham Green Fete.  Organised by Friends Committee member, Michael Butlin, along with sponsorship and support from many local businesses, schools and community organizations, the afternoon was a great success.  Opened by our local MP, Vincent Cable, with the Mayor, Councillor Mrs Celia Hodges, starting the cricket matches, many people were on The Green, enjoying the days events.  Enthusiastic support was given by the local Police and Fire Service, and there’s nothing like  Fire Engine or a  Police Car to keep a little person happily amused.

On our own Friends stall, we held a raffle to raise funds for our tree planting, and I must express our gratitude to several local organisations for the gifts they kindly donated.  Twickenham Cricket Club, Thamesian Rugby Club, Arthur’s Bistro, Taste of Raj and Len Smith’s Sports Shop, all generously gave gifts, that made it easy for us to sell our raffle tickets.  The main sponsors for the Fete, can be seen elsewhere on this site, on the programme for the event.

What is so pleasing with these events, is that it rewards the hard work that The Friends put in to preserve The Green, and make it such a valuable resource for local people to enjoy.

This coming Saturday, 18th July, sees The Friends sponsoring a day’s cricket, at Twickenham Cricket Club, (see the photo below).  This serves to demonstrate the successful co-operation between our two groups, and again sees The Green being enjoyed by so many.

Do not forget that our next full members meeting is also our Annual General Meeting, and will be held in The Cricket Pavilion, on Tuesday, September 1st.  I look forward to seeing you there.

Chairman of The Friends of Twickenham Green, Howard Roberts, and Captain of Twickenham Cricket Club First Eleven, Carlos Nunes, are joined by cricket club members and members of The Friends, to celebrate a day’s cricket sponsored by The Friends of Twickenham Green.  This happily serves to demonstrate the close co-operation between our two organisations, committed to seeing The Green being enjoyed responsibly by all.
