April 2009 - News Update
Twice a year, The Friends of Twickenham Green meet on a Sunday morning and engage in a clean up of The Green, (see photos lower down on this page). This year’s Spring Clean up occurred on 29th March. Whilst the Green does get visited by the various council agencies, The Friends are able to put a relatively larger number of people into action, and get to grips with the litter that builds up, especially in areas like the shrubbery behind the re-cycling bins. At the end of a morning's work, several bags of rubbish had been collected ready for the council to collect. One of the advantages of this exercise, is that it does give us a chance to have a close up look at how The Green is faring. It is good to see that the new turf that has been laid near the gateway on the Hampton Road, and also the strip parallel to the path, seems to be taking well. Furthermore, our new Plane Trees are all looking healthy, and are now coming in to bud. Interestingly, the Horse Chestnut’s seem to be a month ahead of the Plane trees. It was quite good to hear a senior member of The Friends saying that he had not seen The Green looking so good for a long time. Maybe we can get somewhere after all.
I am glad to see that the website is helping us to reach out to new members, and those with contributions to make. You may well have noticed that we have started to receive some interesting historical photographs of The Green and the immediate area. Please keep them coming in. We look forward to putting together a pictorial history of The Green. Does anyone have any photos of The Green when it was surrounded by a hedge? Any photos of the air raid shelter or the allotments? We look forward to hearing from you.
Please note, last month I stated that the new tree to be planted by the re-cycling bins at the junction of First Cross Road, and Hampton Road, was to be an Asa. It is in fact going to be a Field Maple. Apologies.
Happy Easter to you all, and may you continue to enjoy The Green.
