April 2010 News Update

Nice to see The Green in the sunshine, but how strange not to hear the aeroplanes?

Along with Sam, our Environment Officer, and Tony Bendelow from the Cricket Club, I met with Reg Leach from The Parks Department.  It appears that the autumn seeding has been fairly effective, but that The Green would benefit from a further seeding now.  This will be taking place shortly, along with aeration of the grass.  It was also pointed out, that we have the beginnings of a weed problem.  We might be looking at the use of a liquid weed killer this time next year.  Parks have assured me this will be safe, and will provide literature on the matter in advance.

Sadly another of the old chestnut tress will be coming down.  It is marked with a white cross, and is along the Staines Road boundary.  A replacement London Plane will go in straight away to replace it.  All the replacement London planes appear to be thriving, although they do leaf later than the chestnuts.

Regular members will shortly be receiving standing order forms, so that we may streamline our membership procedure.  It is much less time consuming for the hard pressed committee members if funds can be paid by standing order.  For those that prefer, will retain the ability for members to pay by cash or cheque.

Keep an eye on our diary for this summer’s events on The Green, and as ever, we look forward to seeing you enjoying this precious open space.

Cheers,

Howard Roberts, Chair, Friends of Twickenham Green
